Dear parents and carers,
Further to our update from earlier this afternoon, it is with regret that I must inform you that the site has been assessed and is deemed unsafe for opening tomorrow.
We are taking the step of informing you now rather than tomorrow morning since there is no realistic prospect of the site being any better than it is at this moment, and every likelihood that it will be significantly worse. We hope that this early notification is helpful.
Despite extensive clearance of the site throughout today, the drop in temperature - which is forecast to fall further tonight - is already impacting the main routes to the school and the accessibility of routes around the site itself.
Essentially, then, the site remains unsafe. As much of the snow as possible has been cleared and the site staff have worked incredibly hard, gritting, salting and cordoning off areas of the site in the hope of opening safely tomorrow, however the bus bay, pedestrian gate and main gates on Mynydd Garnllwyd Road are frozen with ice, as are the approaches to these, with the temperatures forecast for tonight expected to worsen these conditions significantly. This is especially dangerous given the gradient of these key access points to the school.
Crucially, due to the ice on the main yard and other areas we would not have a suitable fire assembly point for students, staff and visitors, or means of evacuating the school safely and quickly should we need to as we have had to close off unsafe paths, walkways and routes which are already icing over due to the site’s elevated and exposed position.
Following consultation, the risks of accessing the site and circulating it tomorrow, prior to improvements in the weather forecast for the afternoon, are deemed too high.
It is with careful consideration that the school will therefore be closed for pupils and staff tomorrow, Tuesday, 6th January, and work will be provided via Teams. Please be assured that this decision is not taken lightly, but with the safety of your child paramount in our decision-making.
Thank you.
Mrs Pole
